  • Chilling PSA Highlights School Shooting Realities
WARNING: Video maybe to graphic for some viewers. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.
A new PSA video from Sandy Hook Promise begins as a cheery and often-familiar back-to-school ad but slowly unfolds to highlight students using everyday back-to-school items to survive a shooting.

The students are featured using their new sneakers to run from gunshots, skateboards to break windows to escape the school shooting, scissors and pencils as knives, and – possibly most heartbreaking – a cell phone to text their mom a final “I love you” as they hid in the bathroom.

Warning: The video contains graphic content related to school shootings & may be upsetting to some viewers.

If you feel this subject matter may be difficult for you, you may choose not to watch.

“So far this year there have been over 22 school shootings, and with students heading back to school, it seems sadly probable that we will see more incidents. This is unacceptable, given that we have proven tools to prevent these acts from occurring. We cannot accept school shootings as the new normal in our country. Our goal with this PSA is to wake up parents to the horrible reality that our children endure. Gone are the days of viewing back-to-school as just a carefree time, when school violence has become so prevalent. However, if we come together to know the signs, this doesn’t have to be the case. I hope that parents across the country will join me to make the promise to stop this epidemic,” said Nicole Hockley, co-founder and managing director of Sandy Hook Promise and mother of Dylan who was killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting, in a press release.

Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut led by family members whose loved ones were killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

Their mission is to prevent gun violence and other forms of violence and victimization before happening by creating a culture of engaged youth and adults committed to identifying, intervening, and getting help for individuals who might be at risk of hurting themselves or others.

  • Trump's INSANE Lie About Ilhan Omar Dancing [Trump-Insane...Synonyms?]
Washington (CNN): Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday dismissed President Donald Trump's ability to navigate escalating tensions with Iran, pointing to the controversy over Hurricane Dorian's path and whether it would hit Alabama.

"Congress has the constitutional right to declare war. The President doesn't have it. The secretary of state doesn't it have and Saudi Arabia certainly doesn't have it," Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, told CNN's Erin Burnett on "OutFront."

"I think we need to make sure that the American people understand that this administration -- that lies about weather maps or crowd sizes -- cannot be trusted to give us the full information we need to be able to make a decision whether we should be going to war or not with Iran."

"We are not in a position to think about another endless war and I really hope that my colleagues in Congress are going to pressure this administration to take a step back and figure out how we use diplomacy in the de-escalating the situation," she added.

  • "We in the Media Have Not Been Doing Our Job": 250+ News Outlets Pledge to Focus on Climate Crisis
A major new project from The Nation and the Columbia Journalism Review hopes to improve global coverage of the climate crisis, with more than 250 media outlets around the world — including Democracy Now! — signing on to the effort to publish or broadcast stories on climate.

Organizers say this is one of the most ambitious efforts ever to organize the world’s media around a single topic.

The week of coverage, which leads up to next week’s U.N. Climate Action Summit, kicked off on Sunday.

As part of the effort, CBS News released a new poll of over 2,000 U.S. residents that measured attitudes around climate change, which found that two-thirds of Americans believe climate change is either a crisis or a serious problem, and a majority want immediate action to address the Earth’s temperature rise.

In San Francisco, we speak with Mark Hertsgaard, one of the co-founders of the project, called Covering Climate Now, and The Nation’s environment correspondent and investigative editor.

  • Greta Thunberg on the Climate Fight: “If We Can Save the Banks, Then We Can Save the World”
Greta Thunberg is one of the great truth-tellers of this or any time. But Greta is not all talk. All of this began with action.

It began when Greta realized that if she wanted powerful politicians to put themselves on emergency footing to fight climate change, then she needed to reflect that state of emergency in her own life.

And so she stopped doing the one thing all kids are supposed to do when everything is normal: Go to school to prepare for their future as adults.

Instead, she stationed herself outside of Sweden’s parliament with a handmade sign that said simply: “School Strike for the Climate.”

She started doing it every Friday, and pretty soon she attracted a small crowd. Then other students started doing it in other cities as well.

Students like Alexandria Villaseñor, who stations herself outside the United Nations in this city every Friday, week after week, rain, snow or shine. Sometimes the student climate strikes were just one lonely kid.

Sometimes tens of thousands showed up.

And then, on March 15, came the first Global School Strike for Climate.

Over 2,000 strikes in 125 countries, with 1.6 million young people participating on a single day. 1.6 million people.

That’s quite an achievement for a movement that began just eight months earlier with a single 15-year-old girl in Stockholm, Sweden.

And now this movement is gearing up for its biggest challenge yet: They have called on people of all ages to join the and go on strike, all around the world, on September 20.

Because protecting the future is not a spectator sport.

Thunberg and the many other amazing young organizers have been very clear that they do not want adults to pat them on the head and thank them for the hope infusion.

They want us to join them and fight for the future alongside them.

Because it is their right-And ALL of our duty.

  • "Exactly What I've Hoped For": 100+ Education Leaders Voice Support for Sanders K-12 Plan
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/09/10/exactly-what-ive-hoped-100-education-leaders-voice-support-sanders-k-12-plan
    Jessica Corbett, staff writer

More than 100 national education leaders are publicly backing 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders' plan to reform the American school system, his campaign announced Tuesday.

Unveiled in May, the Thurgood Marshall Plan for Public Education calls for "a transformative investment in our children, our teachers, and our schools, and a fundamental re-thinking of the unjust and inequitable funding of our public education system."

"No president or presidential candidate has offered a proposal so bold and sweeping, which directly addresses the fiscal starving of American public education at the same time that the federal government got into the business of regulating, mandating, and controlling the nation's schools and classrooms," declared Diane Ravitch, former U.S. assistant secretary of education and research professor at New York University.

Sanders aims to address "the serious crisis in our education system by reducing racial and economic segregation in our public school system, attracting the best and the brightest educational professionals to teach in our classrooms, and reestablishing a positive learning environment for students in our K-12 schools," according to his campaign.

"Bernie's strong and ethical education platform is exactly what I've hoped for," Jonathan Kozol, a National Book Award recipient and activist for public schools and racial equality, said Tuesday. "His courageous and unqualified support for racial integration of our public schools sets him apart from the timid and equivocating centrists who have put unprincipled consensus ahead of social justice in the primary campaigns."

The White House hopeful's public education proposal has 10 key goals:

Combating Racial Discrimination and School Segregation
End the Unaccountable Profit-Motive of Charter Schools
    Equitable Funding for Public Schools
Strengthen the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Give Teachers a Much-Deserved Raise and Empower them to Teach
    Expand After-School/Summer Education Programs
    Universal School Meals
    Community Schools
    School Infrastructure
Make Schools a Safe and Inclusive Place for All

Part of Sanders' education plan includes banning new for-profit charter schools. As Common Dreams reported earlier this year, he was the first candidate in the Democratic primary race to take that position.

"Ninety percent of parents in this country send their kids to public schools, and they want those public schools to be a top priority," Randi Weingarten, president of American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and another backer of Sanders' plan, said Tuesday. "That's why Sen. Sanders' plan to invest in public schools and provide real accountability over private alternatives is vitally important."

Weingarten, Ravitch, and Kozol were joined by dozens of other education leaders, union organizers, school reform groups, and college professors who endorsed Sanders' platform—as students and educators across the country kick off a new school year.

Other supporters of the plan included Noam Chomsky, professor emeritus of linguistics at MIT; Abdul El-Sayed, former executive director of the Detroit Health Department; Adolph Reed Jr., professor emeritus of political science the the University of Pennsylvania; Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research; and Cornel West, professor of the practice of public philosophy at Harvard University and professor emeritus at Princeton University.
