• LETTER SENT TO TORONTO MAYOR JOHN TORY AND THE 'ANTI HATE NETWORK' IN REGARDS TO HATE INCITEMENT ON THE STREETS OF TORONTO

Toronto Mayor, John Tory, Bernie Farber, Chair, Anti-Hate Network, Evan Balgord, Executive Director, Anti-Hate Network

It has come to our attention that Al Haashim Atangana Kamena was practicing Dawah (proselytizing) on the streets of Toronto while inciting hate against an identifiable faith-based group. Here are excerpts from his statements (recorded on video on Monday October 14, 2019):

“The media is controlled by the Jews. The Jews, the very least, they control the media and they [the Jews] are doing everything possible to demonize Islam, right? So because they are doing everything possible to demonize Islam, they [the Jews] want to make people think that Islam is all about terrorism and things like that... [See] what's is going on with the media. The media is controlled by the Jews... Islam is going to win, so you need to understand that Islam is the solution for all the problems that America has.”

    Reference: https://www.facebook.com/ron.banerj/videos/10162442817305361/

Mayor Tory, in response to the hate messages sent to Soufi's restaurant, you stated: “When these things happen, we have to stand up and stand beside people like this and say: ‘Keep your business open. We’re going to come and support you ... I think it is a tiny group of people who sit in dark rooms in their basement and I think they whip 10 of these pseudonyms up and put these messages out. I don’t know why they do it … and I don’t understand them, but they’re not typical of who we are.”

    Reference: https://globalnews.ca/…/mayor-john-tory-visits-soufis-toro…/

In this case, the individual in question is well-known and his hateful preaching was performed in the public sphere in the heart of downtown Toronto. On another occasion at the same place, he preached against the LGBTQ community.

    Reference: https://globalnews.ca/news/4437645/no-fly-list-6-million/

According to Toronto Police Service, the Jewish community was the most frequently victimized group by hate crimes in 2018.

Fighting Hate in Canada is urging Mayor Tory to publicly condemn hateful messages against the Jewish community and to instruct the Toronto Police Service to launch an investigation in this case.

Fighting Hate in Canada is calling on Bernie Farber, Chair of the Anti-Hate Network, and Evan Balgord, Executive Director of the Anti-Hate Network to condemn in the strongest possible terms this manifestation of anti-Jewish hate.

    Sincerely,

    Fighting Hate in Canada

  • In European First, Proposed Constitutional Amendment in Sweden Would Enshrine Rights of Nature
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/08/european-first-proposed-constitutional-amendment-sweden-would-enshrine-rights-nature
    Jon Queally, staff writer

Heralded as the first of its kind in Europe, a proposed constitutional amendment in Sweden seeks to enshrine the rights of Nature to ensure that the creatures, fona, and features of the natural world are protected from exploitation and abuse by endowing them with legal status previously reserved only for humans and select animals.

"Economic growth has been the real goal, not a healthy environment. I'm tired of this era, where our arrogant worldview has driven us far beyond the planetary boundaries."

The proposed amendment to Sweden's Instrument of Government, the nation's constitutional document, would secure the Rights of Nature to "existera, blomstra, regenerera och utvecklas"—which translates as "exist, flourish, regenerate, and evolve"—in order to provide the people and government of Sweden the ability to defend and enforce these rights on behalf of Nature.

Introduced by Swedish MP Rebecka Le Moine with the backing of a coalition of national and international groups—including Rights of Nature Sweden, Lodyn, and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund's International Center for the Rights of Nature—the change to Swedish law mirrors that of others in the world but, if passed, would set a new precedent in Europe.

"For twenty years, we have been working with the national environmental goals in Sweden. After all this time, we are barely reaching two of them," Le Moine said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The underlying value in our society is that we are the dominators of this world, and Nature is just a resource for us to use," she continued. "Economic growth has been the real goal, not a healthy environment. I'm tired of this era, where our arrogant worldview has driven us far beyond the planetary boundaries. Now, when we're in the beginning of an ecological and climate collapse, I hope we can re-think our relationship with Nature. And for me, it starts with admitting that Nature has rights."

On its website, the group Rights of Nature Sweden explained the process for having the amendment adopted this way:

A proposed rights of nature amendment to the Constitution could be introduced directly into the Riksdag by Members of Parliament.

Members of Parliament may introduce private motions for consideration by the Riksdag. This occurs in the autumn, when the Riksdag opens, during which time Members may propose private motions.

Each motion is referred to a parliamentary committee for its review and consideration (a rights of nature amendment possibly would be referred to the Committee on the Constitution, or the Committee on the Environment and Agriculture). The committee then examines the motion and presents a proposal for how the Riksdag should decide before it adopts a position in the Chamber.

As the group also noted, this approach to defending the natural world is hardly new, with legal rights of nature having already been "recognized in laws and court decisions in the United States, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, India, New Zealand, and Colombia."

Mari Margil, associate director of CELDF's International Center for the Rights of Nature, championed the proposal and thanked Le Moine for her leadership.

"We need to quickly make a fundamental shift in our relationship with the natural world," Margil said. "Advancing the Rights of Nature in Sweden's constitution is an important step forward. We congratulate Parliamentarian Le Moine on taking this politically brave, and necessary, step."

  • How can we be spiritual with Christianity? What I mean by spirituality is that sitting cross legged and meditating is not a particularly Christian thing to do in the west. Europeans do not sit cross legged. Therefore, it is really hard to be spiritual with Christianity compared to Buddhism. I am currently reading Buddhism For Dummies and using the Buddhify app, and it seems a lot easier to be spiritual with Buddhism and more comfortable than Christianity. It’s as if there is nothing to do in Christianity, we get no instruction. We get the New Testament, the Lord’s Prayer and Communion and that’s about it. With Buddhism there is so much teaching, technicality, instruction and meditation etc. The Buddha had so many teachings and taught everyone how to remove suffering. For example, there is the four noble truths, the eightfold path, the Dhammapada, and the vinaya besides a lot more. In short Buddhism is cool. Being spiritual with Christianity is a bit cringing. Why? If it is possible or even right to be spiritual with Christianity, then I humbly ask YHWH, Jesus Christ and the Buddha to mercifully show me how. Amen.

Through meditation I have realised that the reason it is easy and cool to be spiritual with Buddhism and it is difficult and a bit cringing to be spiritual with Christianity is because Buddhism teaches you that you can attain Buddhahood, enlightenment and nirvana, where as Christianity never teaches you that you can attain divinity like Christ or ‘Christhood’. It is a fundamental aspect of Buddhism to pursue enlightenment or nirvana, you vow to attain it, where as there is nothing like it in Christianity.

So why does Buddhism allow us to pursue enlightenment or nirvana and Christianity not? Because the Buddha lived a full and lengthy life reaching the age of 80 before he died naturally, that is 45 years of teaching and preaching after he attained nirvana at the age of 35. While Jesus Christ was brutally killed unnaturally by being nailed to the cross at the age 30 or 33.

So how do you attain brotherly Buddhahood or ‘Christhood’? To me a fundamental aspect of it is that you have to give everything away. The essay on my website expands on this and tries to show some insight into how that may be possible.

  • Bernie WINS Climate Change Town Hall
CNN’s climate crisis town hall on Wednesday night was an unprecedented seven hours of discussion on climate change with 10 of the Democratic 2020 presidential contenders.

It was also the most substantive discussion of climate change policies ever broadcast on primetime television.

Each candidate was given a 40-minute segment, meaning they could provide long, nuanced answers to hard questions on the most far-reaching issue of our time.

There was a lot that could have gone wrong, so it’s remarkable so much went right.

The town hall easily outshone the muddled discussion in the paltry half-hour or so devoted to climate change across eight hours of official Democratic debates.

  • Calling for End of "War Against Nature," Greta Thunberg's Arrival in US Brings Swell of Attention to Global Climate Strike
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/08/29/calling-end-war-against-nature-greta-thunbergs-arrival-us-brings-swell-attention
    Jake Johnson, staff writer

After two weeks of sailing, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived in New York on Wednesday with an urgent call to action.

"The climate and ecological crisis is a global crisis, and the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced. And if we don't manage to work together to cooperate... despite our differences, then we will fail. So we need to stand together," Thunberg told a crowd of supporters who gathered to celebrate her arrival. "Let's not wait any longer. Let's do it now."

Thunberg's lonely protest outside the Swedish parliament building last August, and her persistent activism in the months since, sparked a wave of youth-led climate demonstrations across the world and inspired the global climate strikes set to kick off in over a 150 countries next month.

Organizers expect the strikes, scheduled to begin Sept. 20, to be the largest climate demonstration since the "Fridays for Future" movement launched—and maybe ever.

"Sea levels are rising, and so are we!" activists chanted as the emissions-free boat that carried Thunberg across the Atlantic approached New York.

Thunberg's journey by boat, which stemmed from her refusal to fly due to the carbon emissions spouted by planes, garnered significant coverage from America's major television networks, bringing more attention to the forthcoming week of global climate action.

    Video: [https://youtu.be/tE84D99ZsUM]

Upon reaching shore, Thunberg said it is "insane that a 16-year-old has to cross the Atlantic Ocean to make a stand." But in doing so, the Swedish environmentalist galvanized young people who are eager to take to the streets and force political leaders to act on the existential threat posed by the climate crisis.

"Something that's really common among young people is a lot of time we just aren't given that platform," Shiv, a college sophomore, told Earther. "Now, Greta and millions of other kids are showing that we don't need it handed to us. We can fight for the platform that we deserve and that our voices need to be heard."

"On the 20th, we have three main demands as part of our coalition, which is no more fossil fuels, a just transition for frontline communities and for everybody in general, as well as holding fossil fuel executives accountable," said Shiv. "I think a really big contribution [Thunberg] had is really making young people realize that we do have power, that we have the ability to change the conversation."

Not wasting time following her arrival in the United States, Thunberg said she is planning to take part in a climate strike outside of the United Nations headquarters in New York City on Friday.

On Twitter, U.N. secretary-general António Guterres welcomed Thunberg to New York and applauded her commitment to confronting the planetary emergency.

"The determination and perseverance shown during your journey should embolden all of us taking part in next month's Climate Action Summit," said Guterres, referring to the U.N. event in New York on Sept. 23, which will come as people across the world strike for a livable future and pressure world leaders to take action in line with the urgent recommendations of the scientific community.

"We must deliver on the demands of people around the world," Guterres said, "and address the global climate crisis."
