  • The Promise October 12 But remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT

If the person in the adjoining work station dropped a dollar bill, or perhaps even a fiver, you probably wouldn’t be tempted to keep it. But what if your threshold was a thousand-dollars dropped under her desk? God knows your limits. If you are in covenant with Him, He doesn’t interfere with your freedom, but curbs the devil’s ability to tempt you to that which you can handle.

In addition, as His covenant child, you have the promise of a way out of that tightening passage of temptation. His power and promise sustain you when the enticements slither through your life. https://mailchi.mp/31fe7fd51de8/his-image-453193?e=9cbe669f39

  • 'Get On the Streets. And Bring Everybody': Extinction Rebellion Kicks Off Two Weeks of Global Action
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/07/get-streets-and-bring-everybody-extinction-rebellion-kicks-two-weeks-global-action
    Jessica Corbett, staff writer

Nearly a year after Extinction Rebellion launched in London, the global movement that uses nonviolent civil disobedience to demand ambitious climate action kicked off two weeks of protests on Monday with demonstrations around the world that blocked major roadways and led to arrests.

"Starting on October 7th, for 2 weeks, Extinction Rebellion is calling an International Rebellion. Together, we will peacefully occupy the centers of power and shut them down until governments act on the climate and ecological emergency," the XR movement says on its website. "Leave your desk. Invite your boss. Walk out of school. Switch off the TV. Put down your phone. Get on the streets. And bring everybody."

London is just one of 60 global cities where XR members held protests Monday and are planning future actions for International Rebellion, according to the movement's webpage that sorts upcoming protests by continent. Demonstrators worldwide turned out in droves Monday and are set to continue engaging in peaceful civil disobedience in the coming days across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania.

After the London Metropolitan Police on Saturday used a battering ram to raid an XR building in the city and seize items such as disability ramps that organizers had planned to use to make the movement's demonstrations "accessible and safe for all," XR activists on Monday blocked traffic across the city's government district of Westminster.

Reuters reported that at least 135 people were arrested. According to the news agency:

Large crowds of protesters blocked some of Westminster's largest and busiest roads, bridges and squares, carrying banners with slogans such as "Climate change denies our children a future unless we act now."

Banging drums and chanting, they took over the tourist hotspot of Trafalgar Square and marched down the Mall, the broad tree-lined avenue that leads to Buckingham Palace.

Some activists glued or chained themselves to cars parked in the middle of roads or to street lamps, making it hard for police officers to detain them.

"We're here because the government is not doing enough on the climate emergency," Lizzy Mansfield told Reuters. "We only get one planet and so we're here to try and defend it."

XR parked a hearse at Trafalgar Square to mourn mass species extinction and sent a message to the U.K. Parliament that "truth demands action" by hanging a banner on a barge in the River Thames:

"Meanwhile, activists from Animal Rebellion, a movement allied to Extinction Rebellion, began marching from Russell Square to Smithfield Meat Market on Monday afternoon," reported BBC News. "Organizers said they plan to stage an overnight occupation of the market to share their 'vision of a future plant-based food system.'"

From London, Berlin, and Madrid, to Paris, Philadephia, and Toronto, activists, reporters, and supporters shared updates from the streets on social media Monday with the hashtags #InternationalRebellion, #EverybodyNow, and #TheTimesIsNow.

"In Berlin, around 1,000 people blocked the Grosser Stern, a traffic circle in the middle of the German capital's Tiergarten park dominated by the landmark Victory Column," according to The Associated Press. "That protest began before dawn."

Highlighting protests in other European cities, the AP reported:

In Amsterdam, hundreds of demonstrators blocked a major road outside the Rijksmuseum, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, and set up tents. The protest went ahead despite a city ban on activists gathering on the road. The protesters ignored police calls for them to move to a nearby square.

In Spain, a few dozen activists briefly chained themselves to each other and to an elevated road over a major artery in the Madrid, snarling traffic during the morning rush hour. The National Police said 33 activists were taken to their premises and three were arrested for resisting orders by anti-riot officers.

Four teenage girls were among about 30 people who were arrested in Sydney on Monday for attempting to stop vehicle traffic, XR organizers told The Guardian. According to the newspaper, hundreds of people joined a march and rally in Australia's capital city.

Sisters 10-year-old Luka and 12-year-old Maddie Brett-Hall were among those who marched from Sydney's Belmore Park to the central business district. Maddie said, "I feel like we need to make a difference."

Ember Henninger, a 10-year-old who also marched in Sydney on Monday, said that "the government tells us to just be kids ... and this makes me feel angry."

XR's International Rebellion follows a global week of action bookended by a pair of climate strikes on Sept. 20 and 27, which were inspired by the school strikes launched by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg and other youth climate activists worldwide. The #ClimateStrike actions coincided with the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York City.

"As the results of the U.N. summit highlight, we can no longer rely on governments to do what is needed in the face of climate and ecological breakdown," Extinction Rebellion NYC spokesperson Trellan Smith said in a statement last month. "We have the right and moral obligation to be on the streets telling the truth about this crisis and demanding responses from our government at this critical time."

  • 'Good!' Says Sanders as Lobbyists Lash Out at Proposal to End Corporate Domination of US Politics
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/08/good-says-sanders-lobbyists-lash-out-proposal-end-corporate-domination-us-politics
    Jake Johnson, staff writer

Sen. Bernie Sanders's 2020 presidential campaign late Monday enthusiastically welcomed lobbyist backlash over the senator's new proposal to dramatically curb the power of corporate money in politics and bar the Democratic National Committee from taking cash from big business.

"Good!" Sanders tweeted in response to a story in The Hill that quoted several lobbyists opposed to the senator's plan, which would ban corporate donations to the Democratic Party Convention in Milwaukee if Sanders becomes the presidential nominee. As Politico reported last month, Democratic operatives have already begun seeking lobbyist help with financing the event.

Stewart Verdery, CEO of public affairs firm Monument Advocacy, warned that "telling companies who would like to partner with the party to take their ball and go home will easily feed into an anti-capitalist motif."

"On the substance side, hosting a convention is a major endeavor that can strap the budgets of parties and cities—the money has to come from somewhere and cutting off corporate donations may further depress interest in hosting a convention," said Verdery. "On the image side, the Democrats always have to balance their populist rhetoric with quieter outreach to the business community."

The Hill also granted anonymity to a Democratic lobbyist who bashed Sanders's proposal as a "desperate" attempt to outdo Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-Mass.) anti-corruption plan.

"This is simply a game of one-upmanship from a desperate campaign that doesn’t have the ability to draft a 27-page thesis like Warren," said the lobbyist.

The Sanders campaign—which proudly touts a list of "anti-endorsements" on its website—was unmoved by the lobbyists' criticism. In fact, as deputy campaign manager Ari Rabin-Havt put it, lobbyist outrage over the proposal "is not a bug—it's a feature."

Warren Gunnels, Sanders's senior adviser, tweeted: "We welcome their hatred."

In a statement to The Hill, Sanders national policy director Josh Orton pointed to the senator's grassroots fundraising model—which brought the campaign $25.3 million from an average donation of just $18 in the third quarter of 2019—and said "corporate lobbyists will never buy influence with Bernie, period."

"Bernie Sanders is building an unprecedented grassroots campaign to end corruption," said Orton, "and as a nominee would host a grassroots conventions for delegates, party members, teachers, workers, nurses, farmers, and students."

  • In European First, Proposed Constitutional Amendment in Sweden Would Enshrine Rights of Nature
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/08/european-first-proposed-constitutional-amendment-sweden-would-enshrine-rights-nature
    Jon Queally, staff writer

Heralded as the first of its kind in Europe, a proposed constitutional amendment in Sweden seeks to enshrine the rights of Nature to ensure that the creatures, fona, and features of the natural world are protected from exploitation and abuse by endowing them with legal status previously reserved only for humans and select animals.

"Economic growth has been the real goal, not a healthy environment. I'm tired of this era, where our arrogant worldview has driven us far beyond the planetary boundaries."

The proposed amendment to Sweden's Instrument of Government, the nation's constitutional document, would secure the Rights of Nature to "existera, blomstra, regenerera och utvecklas"—which translates as "exist, flourish, regenerate, and evolve"—in order to provide the people and government of Sweden the ability to defend and enforce these rights on behalf of Nature.

Introduced by Swedish MP Rebecka Le Moine with the backing of a coalition of national and international groups—including Rights of Nature Sweden, Lodyn, and the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund's International Center for the Rights of Nature—the change to Swedish law mirrors that of others in the world but, if passed, would set a new precedent in Europe.

"For twenty years, we have been working with the national environmental goals in Sweden. After all this time, we are barely reaching two of them," Le Moine said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The underlying value in our society is that we are the dominators of this world, and Nature is just a resource for us to use," she continued. "Economic growth has been the real goal, not a healthy environment. I'm tired of this era, where our arrogant worldview has driven us far beyond the planetary boundaries. Now, when we're in the beginning of an ecological and climate collapse, I hope we can re-think our relationship with Nature. And for me, it starts with admitting that Nature has rights."

On its website, the group Rights of Nature Sweden explained the process for having the amendment adopted this way:

A proposed rights of nature amendment to the Constitution could be introduced directly into the Riksdag by Members of Parliament.

Members of Parliament may introduce private motions for consideration by the Riksdag. This occurs in the autumn, when the Riksdag opens, during which time Members may propose private motions.

Each motion is referred to a parliamentary committee for its review and consideration (a rights of nature amendment possibly would be referred to the Committee on the Constitution, or the Committee on the Environment and Agriculture). The committee then examines the motion and presents a proposal for how the Riksdag should decide before it adopts a position in the Chamber.

As the group also noted, this approach to defending the natural world is hardly new, with legal rights of nature having already been "recognized in laws and court decisions in the United States, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, India, New Zealand, and Colombia."

Mari Margil, associate director of CELDF's International Center for the Rights of Nature, championed the proposal and thanked Le Moine for her leadership.

"We need to quickly make a fundamental shift in our relationship with the natural world," Margil said. "Advancing the Rights of Nature in Sweden's constitution is an important step forward. We congratulate Parliamentarian Le Moine on taking this politically brave, and necessary, step."
