It was, in a subtle way, a defining moment.

After a 15-day trek across the Atlantic Ocean, Thunberg looked exhausted. Still, the 16-year-old climate change activist knew she had to talk about the meaning and purpose of her unorthodox journey with supporters who greeted her on an overcast New York shoreline.

Predictably, the tired, petite Swedish schoolgirl faltered, losing her train of thought briefly before apologising. "I'm sorry," she said, "my brain is not working correctly."

The crowd applauded. Energised by the encouragement, Thunberg finished her short speech, where she urged the rest of us to "work together, despite our differences" to avert "the biggest crisis humanity has faced … because, otherwise, it might be too late. Let's not wait any longer. Let's do it now."

For me, that distinctly human moment crystalised the appeal of Thunberg—a young woman who, distressed at the world's inexorable destruction, was moved to do something about it. Alone, if necessary.

In words and deeds, Thunberg is the embodiment of philosopher Howard Zinn's admonition: "We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can quietly become a power no government can suppress, a power that can transform the world."

She disdains celebrity. She makes no claim to heroism. She rebuffs efforts to idolise her. She isn't calculating or preoccupied with fame or ego. There is no artifice about her. She speaks plainly, without affectation or embroidery.

Of course, the marauding swarm of vitriolic right-wing climate-change deniers see Thunberg—not how the prophetic Zinn envisioned her—but as a tiny, pretentious zealot who threatens the existing order. Their order. Their comforts. Their traditional "way of life".

De rigueur, they have set out to discredit and, if possible, to destroy Thunberg with their, by now, familiar and crass modus operandi.

They have mocked her. They have belittled her. They have denigrated her. They have insulted her. They have dismissed her. They have questioned her motives. They have suggested she is anti-democratic. They have, in the fetid recesses of the internet, even threatened her.

To afford all their fuming, sophomoric attacks the imprimatur of seriousness, they insist—as they always do—that they are the implacable realists, who, unlike starry-eyed leftists, aren't duped by the media's veneration of a youngster peddling doom and gloom over the supposedly still-contested science about whether the end is nigh or not.

They would, no doubt, recoil at any suggestion that their furious hostility towards Thunberg is also the product of a calcifying cynicism, seething malevolence or signature cruelty.

Rather, they insist, it is an expression of their necessary role as sceptics or contrarians in the noble tradition of their philosophical patron saint in name only, Galileo, who also questioned the prevailing scientific orthodoxy.

It is a lie and an insult. They aren't "sceptics" or "contrarians". They are scientifically illiterate bullies who amplify their malice and ignorance with a bullhorn on TV or keyboard on Twitter.

They share no intellectual affinity with Galileo. None. Bereft of an argument that could remotely be considered empirically or rationally sound, they traffic in hyperbole and smears designed to pummel Thunberg into an inconsequential afterthought.

The teenage revolutionary must be stopped before the climate revolution she leads goes beyond their ability to halt it.

Consider what the Australian columnist, Andrew Bolt, had to say about her.

"No teenager is more freakishly influential than Thunberg, the deeply disturbed messiah of the global warming movement," he wrote. "I have never seen a girl so young and with so many mental disorders treated by so many adults as a guru."

Not done calling her a freak and disturbed, Bolt invoked Thunberg's reported past eating disorder, emotional and psychological struggles and autism as a cudgel against her.

I defer to psychologists to discern the pathology that would prompt such viciousness. But Bolt's fear of the Thunberg phenomenon is plain. She is prevailing. He is losing. She is being heard, while he shouts obscenities. She grows more relevant by the day, while he slips further into irrelevancy and hysteria.

When the predictable character assassination of a teenager gambit fails, it's time to raise "questions" about who or what powerful forces may be acting as Svengalis exploiting a vulnerable, damaged "child" for their parochial aims and possible profit.

"Is Thunberg a green prophet or a schoolgirl puppet controlled by more sinister forces behind her?" the always temperate London-based The Sun newspaper asked, rhetorically.

Using innuendo and recycled drivel, The Sun claimed a "naive" Thunberg was being manipulated by her "fame-hungry" mother and "energy giants".

Like the paper itself, it is all empty conjecture designed to undermine Thunberg's legitimacy and authenticity and her just cause. It will not work because, clearly, she is no one's marionette.

The irrational, absurd assaults on Thunberg's personality and motives aren't the exclusive preserve of the rancid tabloid press.

Indeed, The New York Times newspaper permitted one journalist, Christopher Caldwell, to argue that Thunberg's appeals for immediate action are, incredibly, "in conflict with democracy".

"Ms Thunberg believes that we should act, not argue," Caldwell wrote in his missive, oozing with condescension about her lack of life experience, "crude language", "unrealistic" world view, and "out of balance" priorities.

While simultaneously acknowledging that the "authorities" agree with Thunberg that the climate crisis constitutes an "emergency", Caldwell claims that the youthful Swede is only interested in "sowing panic" and "simplification".

His cockeyed prescription: more patience. "Democracy calls for waiting and seeing."

[Thunberg] is the personification of the democratic impulse, not the antithesis of it.
This is climate change denialism with the patina of gravitas.

Thunberg, like the overwhelming scientific consensus she is intimately familiar with, is loud and clear on this urgent imperative: The time for waiting and seeing was over long ago.

Patience, in this pressing context, is not a virtue, it is an abdication of responsibility.

Thunberg has deployed every democratic tool at her imaginative disposal to make this salient point again and again. She is the personification of the democratic impulse, not the antithesis of it.

So, I join millions of other global citizens who have been humbled, inspired and stirred by Thunberg's steely steadfastness in the face of the often-repellent locusts who come to bury her, not to praise her.

    Here's looking at you, kid.

    VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE
“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3 ESV)

At the end of the day, do our Christian beliefs and doctrine matter? Isn’t the all-important thing how we behave? Of course, how we behave is important, but why do we behave the way that we behave?

Imagine an iceberg, the tip of it is visible while the remainder of it is invisible, hidden beneath the water. Visible things are the actions but the invisible parts are beliefs: what a person believes to be right and true. These beliefs cause a person to develop their values: what is important and what is not important; where do we spend our energy and not spend our energy.
In other words, beneath the surface are our beliefs and values that are expressed visibly through our actions; our actions do not exist in isolation but are a result of what lies under the surface.

Although our actions are important symptoms––because we are told on Judgement Day that we will be judged based on our actions––when we look at Jesus’ teachings, it is primarily about belief and not behaviour. Why? Because what we believe, the foundation, is the cause of our behaviour. The psalmist asks, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3). If the foundations, our beliefs, are faulty, everything else is going to be faulty. When there is a disconnection between what we believe and how we behave, the reality is we do not actually believe what we say we believe and our foundation crumbles.

When we find ourselves coming to a place like this and saying, “Well, I’m a Christian and I’m part of a church, where there are certain things that I believe,” but we behave totally differently at home, we do not actually believe it. We may have accepted it as true but we do not actually believe because it is not the driving force of understanding in our life. To live superficially is to live on the basis of behaviour only. But we need to live where our behaviour is utterly consistent with what we believe and know to be true. Paul tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
Our spiritual experience begins in the mind with our knowing and believing. This is why it is important to understand what we believe because our convictions and beliefs will be the cause of our actions.

May our visible behaviour be an authentic reflection of God’s invisible truth from His Word that we hide in our hearts.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your word. May my visible actions be a reflection of Your truth hidden in me.

    SOLOMON'S TREASURE FOUND

Yes, where is this precious treasure?

    * What happened to the hidden gold of Solomon’s Temple?
    * Has the most priceless artifact on earth – the Ark of the Covenant - now been found?
    * Is its location really known?

The truth will stagger you! So much so, that the host government walks on a knife edge. So you won’t see it yet.

And linked with these tantalising questions, are others:

    * Did Phoenician ships really come to the Americas?
    * Where did King Solomon get his gold?
    * What was the SINGLE stated reason that his magnificent Temple was constructed?

And you can bury the critics.

    PHOENICIAN VOYAGES

Do you want the truth? Navigation across open ocean was no problem to these explorers.

Due to the insufficient attention paid to this aspect of the subject, we have tended to belittle the size and sophistication of Phoenician shipping.

There is evidence that they had the benefit of sophisticated instruments and large, fast, modern vessels carrying over 500 people. This will be a surprise to many readers.

    SILVER AS CHEAP AS STONES

Anyway, suddenly, in the 10th century BC we find gold and silver in such abundance in Jerusalem that Israel’s king Solomon “made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones for abundance.” So reports the Hebrew book of 1 Kings. (ch.10:27)

And why? "... for the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.” (v. 22)

Hiram was a Phoenician king. And the Israelites and Phoenicians were allies. They sent out global expeditions together.

There can be no question that the peacocks came from south-East Asia. But whence the abundance of silver?

    OUR WOEFUL MODERN IGNORANCE

Because of the depth of ignorance into which Europe fell during the Dark Ages, at times we are apt to forget how advanced were the ideas of the ancients, and how much they knew about the earth and about astronomy and navigation.

Harvard professor Barry Fell concurs. (“America BC: Ancient Settlers in the New World”, p.88)

Hands on researchers in South America are firmly convinced that the Phoenicians traded with South America. Today there is a whole library full of their reports. The Phoenicians even left inscriptions there.

    KING SOLOMON’S RIVER

It now appears that the Americas were the source of much of the gold and silver that found its way to Solomon’s temple.

There is good reason to believe that the ships of King Solomon (975-935 BC) had once come to the Amazon; that the gold countries of Ophir, Tarshish and Parvaim were NOT to be looked for in the Old World at all, BUT HERE in the Amazon region on the Rio Solimoes, Solomon’s River.

But that is another subject (and it is covered in my book “Ark of the Covenant”).

    SOLOMON – FACT OR FABLE?

By the way, has anyone told you that Solomon never existed? Well, you can lay that idea to rest. Here are just a few reasons why:

    * Israeli geologists announced on January 12, 2003 that they had examined a stone tablet dating to 800 BC which detailed repair plans for the Jewish Temple of King Solomon. Tests confirmed it to be authentic.

    * Independently kept copies of a treaty that King Solomon made with Hiram, king of the Phoenician city of Tyre were preserved by the Phoenicians.

    * An independent Ethiopian epic, the “Kebra Nagast”, written about 850 BC, tells the story of an Ethiopian queen’s visit to King Solomon of Israel and of the enormous riches and gifts that he showered upon her.

    * An ancient record in Srinagar, India, declares that Solomon visited there.

    * A monument inscription found in 1984 on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Aqaba bears King Solomon’s name.

You can believe it. Solomon was real.

    CRITICS OUT OF DATE

Biblical writings have come under attack from some critics.

These critics, acting with woefully incomplete information, have simply rushed to judgement.

About 150 years ago, there was virtually no modern biblical archaeology to “test” their assertions.

The critics did not know that hundreds of later historical and archaeological discoveries would support the Bible’s accuracy. And in surprising detail.

Today, there is no excuse. From numerous independent records we know that the people, places and events the biblical writers wrote about, were real.

From a hands-on field archaeologist, here is the bottom line.Time and continued research have demonstrated that historically the Bible is better informed than its critics.

    SOLOMON’S MAGNIFICENT TEMPLE

The tremendous wealth that poured into Israel from these global expeditions can be appreciated to some extent when we reflect on the magnificence of Solomon’s Temple.

It has been calculated that this famous building contained 86 tons of gold and 126 tons of silver.

    INCREDIBLE CONSTRUCTION METHOD

And the technological expertise involved was ingenious.

The first book of Kings reports that it "was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.” (1 Kings 6:7)

    SIZE AND BEAUTY

Can you imagine it? Some of those massive stones were as long as a bus... from 10 to 40 feet long by 6 feet wide. One of them at least weighed approximately 445 tons.

They were pre-cut, then transported from the quarry and slid into place so accurately that it would be difficult to find the seams.

The splendour of Solomon’s Temple would defy comprehension.

Nowhere on the face of this planet did a structure of such size and beauty command the awe of man.

Travellers from many lands would travel great distances just to set eyes on this Temple, never to be disappointed.

Its array of shining metals and precious stones was dazzling beyond belief.

This enormous Temple featured planks of cedar and cypress - fir trees hand-crafted to expose their elegant grains.

The entire structure was overlaid on the inside with gold. Precious stones of onyx and marble were seen in abundance.

Silver, brass and iron were used in the Temple. Outer courtyards and inner chambers were adorned with high-reaching palm trees and colourful flowers.

Using modern equipment capable of determining very precisely the isotopic content of different metals, it has been shown that the lead used in drainpipes in the area of Solomon’s Temple came from the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Britain.

This type of analysis is made possible because lead samples from different locations contain varying amounts of the isotopes of lead, resulting from the decay of radioactive materials.

Similarly with tin. The Temple was adorned with plenty of bronze, and this alloy was made by adding tin to copper in the smelting. The presence of tin caused the copper to become much harder and less easily tarnished.

Tests show that it was British tin that was used by Solomon. The date was about 1000 BC.

    MYSTERIOUS TECHNOLOGY USED

Two cast pillars of brass stood boldly at the entrance.According to an old tradition, the two great pillars were hollow. Stored inside them, according to the same tradition, were "ancient records" and "valuable writings" pertaining to the past of the Hebrew people.

And included among these records had been information on something known as the shamir. (Alexander Home, “King Solomon’s Temple in Masonic Tradition”, p.219)

You may wonder, what was this mysterious shamir?

Moses had instructed his people not to use "any iron tool" in the construction of the holy places.

And Solomon likewise directed that no hammers, axes or chisels should be used to cut and dress the stone blocks with which the Temple would be built.

Instead, according to Jewish sources, he provided the workmen with an ancient device called the shamir, that had been used in the time of Moses to engrave writing on the precious stones of the high priest’s breastplate. (Louis Ginsberg, “The Legends of the Jews”, vol I, p.34 and vol. IV, p.166)

Known as "the stone that splits rocks," the shamir was capable of cutting the toughest materials without friction or heat. This included "the remarkable property of cutting the hardest of diamonds".

There must have been something special about the shamir, for it was said:

“The shamir may not be put in an iron vessel for safekeeping, nor in any metal vessel: it would burst such a receptacle asunder. It is kept wrapped up in a woolen cloth, and this in turn is placed in a lead basket filled with barley bran.”With the destruction of the Temple the shamir vanished.

Islamic traditions concerning the shamir parallelled those of the Jews, with the additional statement that it had been quite noiseless while it was at work.

    VOTAN’S TRIP TO MEDITERRANEAN

From the other side of the world we have the record of Votan, the first historian of the Maya, who lived around 1000 BC. Votan had come originally from the Phoenician city of Chivim, on the eastern Mediterranean coast.

He records that he later made four or more visits to his former home.

On one of these trips he visited a great city wherein a magnificent Temple was in the course of construction, thought by a number of researchers to have been Jerusalem.

Was it Solomon’s Temple that visitors from as far away as the Americas came to see? Possibly. According to other ancient records, "all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom.”

    BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE ARK

Why did King Solomon build his famous Temple? Would you have guessed this?: It was for one purpose - to house the Ark of the Covenant! That reason was actually given in the records they left behind.

That magnificent Temple of fabulous wealth and world renown was specifically conceived and built, for what purpose, but to enshrine the Ark of the Covenant! That was its reason to be!

The actual room known as the Holy of Holies, in which the Ark stood, was a perfect cube - and immensely strong. It measured just over 34 feet long, by 34 feet wide, by 34 feet high.

Its floor, walls and ceiling were lined with fine gold, weighing an estimated 45,000 pounds, that is, more than 20 tons! And it was all riveted with golden nails.

So, what was so important about the Ark of the Covenant? And what became of it when Solomon’s Temple was destroyed?

There have been many decoys, if you wish – and many claims. It took our team years to track down the facts. And a recent expedition took it further.

This priceless artifact has been found – and its location will stagger you! So much so, that the Middle Eastern host government walks on a knife edge. So you won’t see it yet.

Perhaps that’s enough for you know. But if you would like to dig into this further, here’s where to start: http://www.beforeus.com/aoc.html

Anyway, until next time, please keep safe.

    Very best wishes,

ARCHAEOLOGY NEWSFLASH NO.793 SOLOMON'S TREASURE FOUND Yes, where is this precious treasure? * What happened to the hidden gold of Solomon’s Temple? * Has the most priceless artifact on earth – the Ark of the Covenant - now been found? * Is its location really known? The truth will stagger you! So much so, that the host government walks on a knife edge. So you won’t see it yet. And linked with these tantalising questions, are others: * Did Phoenician ships really come to the Americas? * Where did King Solomon get his gold? * What was the SINGLE stated reason that his magnificent Temple was constructed? And you can bury the critics. PHOENICIAN VOYAGES Do you want the truth? Navigation across open ocean was no problem to these explorers. Due to the insufficient attention paid to this aspect of the subject, we have tended to belittle the size and sophistication of Phoenician shipping. There is evidence that they had the benefit of sophisticated instruments and large, fast, modern vessels carrying over 500 people. This will be a surprise to many readers. SILVER AS CHEAP AS STONES Anyway, suddenly, in the 10th century BC we find gold and silver in such abundance in Jerusalem that Israel’s king Solomon “made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones for abundance.” So reports the Hebrew book of 1 Kings. (ch.10:27) And why? "... for the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.” (v. 22) Hiram was a Phoenician king. And the Israelites and Phoenicians were allies. They sent out global expeditions together. There can be no question that the peacocks came from south-East Asia. But whence the abundance of silver? OUR WOEFUL MODERN IGNORANCE Because of the depth of ignorance into which Europe fell during the Dark Ages, at times we are apt to forget how advanced were the ideas of the ancients, and how much they knew about the earth and about astronomy and navigation. Harvard professor Barry Fell concurs. (“America BC: Ancient Settlers in the New World”, p.88) Hands on researchers in South America are firmly convinced that the Phoenicians traded with South America. Today there is a whole library full of their reports. The Phoenicians even left inscriptions there. KING SOLOMON’S RIVER It now appears that the Americas were the source of much of the gold and silver that found its way to Solomon’s temple. Here are just a few reasons why: * Israeli geologists announced on January 12, 2003 that they had examined a stone tablet dating to 800 BC which detailed repair plans for the Jewish Temple of King Solomon. CRITICS OUT OF DATE Biblical writings have come under attack from some critics. SOLOMON’S MAGNIFICENT TEMPLE The tremendous wealth that poured into Israel from these global expeditions can be appreciated to some extent when we reflect on the magnificence of Solomon’s Temple. It has been calculated that this famous building contained 86 tons of gold and 126 tons of silver. INCREDIBLE CONSTRUCTION METHOD And the technological expertise involved was ingenious. The first book of Kings reports that it "was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.” (1 Kings 6:7) SIZE AND BEAUTY Can you imagine it? MYSTERIOUS TECHNOLOGY USED Two cast pillars of brass stood boldly at the entrance.According to an old tradition, the two great pillars were hollow. Stored inside them, according to the same tradition, were "ancient records" and "valuable writings" pertaining to the past of the Hebrew people. And included among these records had been information on something known as the shamir. (Alexander Home, “King Solomon’s Temple in Masonic Tradition”, p.219) You may wonder, what was this mysterious shamir? Moses had instructed his people not to use "any iron tool" in the construction of the holy places. And Solomon likewise directed that no hammers, axes or chisels should be used to cut and dress the stone blocks with which the Temple would be built. Instead, according to Jewish sources, he provided the workmen with an ancient device called the shamir, that had been used in the time of Moses to engrave writing on the precious stones of the high priest’s breastplate. (Louis Ginsberg, “The Legends of the Jews”, vol I, p.34 and vol. IV, p.166) Known as "the stone that splits rocks," the shamir was capable of cutting the toughest materials without friction or heat. This included "the remarkable property of cutting the hardest of diamonds". There must have been something special about the shamir, for it was said: “The shamir may not be put in an iron vessel for safekeeping, nor in any metal vessel: it would burst such a receptacle asunder. VOTAN’S TRIP TO MEDITERRANEAN From the other side of the world we have the record of Votan, the first historian of the Maya, who lived around 1000 BC. Possibly. According to other ancient records, "all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom.” BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE ARK Why did King Solomon build his famous Temple? But if you would like to dig into this further, here’s where to start: http://www.beforeus.com/aoc.html Anyway, until next time, please keep safe. • The time of the Warrior-Healer and the Healer-Warrior.

Along my path of healing, I have had many blessed opportunities to encounter true warriors. Being a peace-making pacifist, it has been difficult for me to fully understand why anyone would ever choose to destroy life, no matter what the circumstance. At times, I felt I could never respect those who would serve such mentalities, until I explored deeper into the hearts of true warrior spirits.

The true warrior never sought to bring harm as a guiding principle, and would only ever go to war under the most dire circumstances. The true warrior would always seek to resolve conflicts through peaceful means whenever possible. The most respectful aspect of the true warrior, however is their complete willingness to lay down their very lives in service of their communities. Few can authentically make this claim, and this aspect of the warrior is worthy of the greatest level of respect.

Sadly we have a society based solely on war as an economic means. The bravery and selflessness of our communities' warriors have been frequently co-opted by the greedy and corrupt to steal resources, to propagate political power, and to further confine and control our own communities.

These were never the intention of the true warriors who signed up to serve. They were made to believe that they were supporting their communities, even when they weren't. They were made to believe and take part in a massive illusion that brought great harm to their own brothers and sisters. They were separated from their own healing ways and suffered great internal and external wounds out of their complete devotion to serving others.

It turns out that warriors and healers are not so different after all. The true healer also devotes their own lives to be in service of others.

One of the biggest gaps in our society is the forgetting of this innate relationship. That warriors are also healers and that healers are also warriors. It is of the utmost importance that we all remember that we have the same goals, to make the world a better place for our own communities.

In all of my explorations I have not seen many who are doing work to bridge this gap. Conversely the State continues to divide and separate the warriors from the healers. Certainly the entire power-structure is at risk if they were to ever authentically come together and return to serving communities, rather than corruption.

When Spirit guided me to Texas, I had no idea what I would find here. Killeen is the home to one of the largest military bases in the US and is also home to an astounding number of soldiers and veterans. Everywhere I go, I have met warriors who have diligently served their communities and who have given up everything to do so. Most are unjustly facing serious wounds incurred by the State who employed them.

To be honest, I have felt ill-equipped to make a difference for these great beings, for how could I guide the way when I can barely understand what their experience must be like. Yet I also know that Spirit guided me here for a reason, and I am honored to be called into being for these heroes.

Thankfully there are already some healers here who are beginning to build bridges; bringing the warriors and healers back together on the common ground of healing and serving our communities. People like those at Knead Peace are working to bring healing to veterans suffering from PTSD using alternative healing modalities.

At Knead Peace, our warriors and healers are coming back together, and it is a major inspiration; offering hope for an otherwise dismal future for us all. This work is of the most critical nature and communities like Knead Peace truly need the support of the broader community in order to succeed in their intentions. Without your support, they cannot succeed.

I am most honored to contribute my art to this cause through my performance tonight, and I wish I could do so much more to support this work. All I have to offer is my own gifts.

Today, I request that my community support in any way possible. There are a variety of ways you can help and every little bit makes a difference.

    AMAZINGLY HUGE ANCIENT SHIPS

I don’t know about you, but at school I found history – the way it was taught - rather boring.

Mind you, I did like history – at least when at home, reading it for myself, enjoying the stories of peoples’ lives. Who doesn’t love a good story?

But in that dreary classroom, things seemed different.

As our teacher rolled off dates to be memorized, acts of parliament, and other dull things (or so it seemed then), I gazed out of the window.

There, in brilliant sunshine, were lucky people walking up and down in the street – free from all this.

Wistfully, I thought, “Oh to be an adult – and have no more responsibility!”

Well, we do grow up and… surprise!

Never mind. Here’s one surprise you should enjoy. Test your knowledge.

    HOW BIG WERE ANCIENT SHIPS?

    What about Christopher Columbus’ ships?

Do you know, Columbus' whole expedition could mount only 88 men. These were separated onto three ships. Two of these ships were only 50 feet in length, about the size of a small fishing boat.

    Okay, that’s easy to picture.

Now, let’s get into a time machine, so to speak, and travel back further… further… further…

    Back to ancient Greece.

When we think of ancient battleships, we think of the tiny ships shown in a movie like Ben Hur. They had 50 or so men, and a single tier of oars.

That may reflect our evolutionary thinking that the ancients, compared to us, were primitive.

While we may flatter ourselves with our imagined knowledge of ancient history, the actual facts coming to light tell quite a different story.

    CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?

You ask, Do we have any descriptions of these ships, so as to know how large they really were?

Yes, we do. Fortunately we do have a good description of one of the early 3rd century ships.

In 280 BC a naval battle took place in the Aegean Sea. The largest ship was named the Leontifera.

It had 8 tiers of oars, with 100 oars per tier. Just calculate that.

That’s right, on each side were 800 rowers – a total of 1,600 men.

But that’s not all. On the upper deck or hatches were also 1,200 fighting men who were under two special commanders.

Although we are not given the dimensions of the ship, the oarsmen on each tier would have to be at least 3 feet apart (that being the approximate distance between airline seats).

For 100 rowers per tier, allowing for a bow and a stern, this ship could easily have been 400 to 500 feet (120 to 150 meters) long.

We should realise also that those ancient battles were not just single morning events. The ships could have been at sea for a few days before and after the battle.

This ship had a crew of over 3,000 men. Can you imagine the provisions it would have to carry!

Another fleet, built around 294 BC, is briefly described by Plutarch.

He says, “Up until this time, no man had seen a ship of 15 or 16 banks of oars… but they had a speed and effectiveness which was more remarkable than their great size.” (Plutarch, Lives – Demetrius, Book 1, chapter 43 in the original work. 9:107-109, Loeb Classical Library No. 101, Harvard University Press, 1996)

Athenaeus describes a large warship built by Ptolemy Philopator (c. 244-205 BC).

It was 420 feet long, 57 feet wide and 72 feet high to the top of her gunwale. Its 4 steering oars were 45 feet long.

It had 40 tiers of oars. When we say 40 tiers we mean 40 levels of rowers!

The oars on the uppermost tier were 57 feet long. The oars were counterbalanced with lead to make them easier to handle.

    It had 12 under-girders 900 feet long.

Now, are you ready for this? Are you sitting down?

The crew consisted of 400 sailors, 4,000 rowers and 2,850 men in arms – a total of 7,250 men. (Athenaeus, The Deipnosophists, Book 5, section 203f-204b. 2:421-425, Loeb Classical Library No. 208, Harvard University Press, 1987)

HOW WOULD YOU GET THE SPACE?

How on earth could you get enough room for so many oarsmen?

It has been suggested that to array the massive number of banks (tiers) the vessel may have been twin-hulled. This would enable the 40 banks to comprise 20 each side.

Some diagrams of smaller vessels show oar openings sometimes arrayed diagonally. This offset allowed for a greater number of banks for a given hull height.

Whatever the solutions, it would be a mistake to under-estimate the ingenuity of the ancients.

    Just try to visualise it.

This ship had a crew that was almost twice as large as that of the largest aircraft carrier we have ever built.

And it would have had to carry provisions for all on board.

Another ship described by Athenaeus had a catapult designed by Archimedes that could hurl a 120 pound (55 kilogram) stone over 600 feet. (Ibid., Book 5, Section 204c-209e. 2:425-447)

DOCUMENTS HAVE THE RING OF TRUTH

Now, a word about ancient records. Although we can never be 100% certain of the accuracy of many ancient documents, one may trust the document in the absence of reasons to believe it is a fabrication.

This is the standard procedure in historical research, whenever a document purports to be giving sober history.

There is consistency to the pattern of ship descriptions as given by ancient historians, such as Pliny and others, and no suggestion of exaggeration.

In the light of this, the dimensions of Noah’s Ark as given in the book of Genesis (300 cubits - 525 feet long) begins to look more like an authentic historical report.

    OTHER GIANT SHIPS

Egyptian open-sea ships were up to 350 feet long and 60 feet wide, with as many as four decks.

The Pharaohs of the Ramesside dynasty, 1200 BC, were able to mount expeditions of 10,000 miners across the Indian Ocean to South Africa and Sumatra.

Ancient China built ships from 250 to 600 feet long - far larger than anything built by later European explorers.

    LUXURY ON BOARD

Two Roman ships were found in the 1920s at the bottom of Lake Nemi, and between 1927 and 1932 were restored, only to be destroyed by German bombers toward the end of World War II.

These luxury cruisers contained accommodation for 120 passengers in 30 cabins of 4 berths each, plus crew’s quarters.

They were richly decorated with mosaic-tiled floors; walls of cypress panelling; metal columns, marble statues; and paintings in the lounge.

There was a library; a ceiling sundial; a salon where a small orchestra entertained the passengers; a large restaurant and kitchen; copper heaters which provided hot water for the baths; and modern plumbing, with bronze pipes and taps.

The underwater part of the hull was sheathed with lead, fastened with copper nails.

Large luxury vessels of Greece and Rome contained temples and swimming pools; also dining halls of marble and alabaster.

Oh boy! We could go on.

Yes, they travelled all over the world – even as far as Antarctica.

Now, if you’d really like to know more, here is how to get it.

Just go to http://www.beforeus.com and you’ll be blown away with some of the information.

    Very best wishes,
    Jonathan Gray

Wistfully, I thought, “Oh to be an adult – and have no more responsibility!” Well, we do grow up and… surprise! Now, let’s get into a time machine, so to speak, and travel back further… further… further… Back to ancient Greece. 101, Harvard University Press, 1996) Athenaeus describes a large warship built by Ptolemy Philopator (c. 208, Harvard University Press, 1987) HOW WOULD YOU GET THE SPACE? 2:425-447) DOCUMENTS HAVE THE RING OF TRUTH Now, a word about ancient records. OTHER GIANT SHIPS Egyptian open-sea ships were up to 350 feet long and 60 feet wide, with as many as four decks. The Pharaohs of the Ramesside dynasty, 1200 BC, were able to mount expeditions of 10,000 miners across the Indian Ocean to South Africa and Sumatra. Ancient China built ships from 250 to 600 feet long - far larger than anything built by later European explorers. LUXURY ON BOARD Two Roman ships were found in the 1920s at the bottom of Lake Nemi, and between 1927 and 1932 were restored, only to be destroyed by German bombers toward the end of World War II.
