As youth with the Fridays for Future movement took to the streets Friday, two weeks ahead of the global #ClimateStrike planned for Sept. 20, environmental activists continued to raise awareness about the upcoming protests being organized in more than 100 countries.

Climate campaigners already have registered over 2,500 strikes worldwide, with more than 450 actions planned for the United States, the advocacy group 350.org announced in a statement Friday.

To register for an event or find one near you, visit globalclimatestrike.net. For U.S. strikes, visit strikewithus.org.

The demonstrations on Sept. 20 will kick off a week of action that coincides with a United Nations climate summit in New York City. Tamara Toles O'Laughlin, 350.org's North America director, said Friday that the global strike "is an intergenerational and multiracial moment to make our stand for our right to transformative climate action that preserves a sustainable, healthy, and livable future for all."

"With the leadership of young people backed by grandparents and parents alike, health workers, teachers, cab drivers and more, now is the time for all of us to come together to demand that real climate leaders at the national, state and local levels hold fossil fuel companies accountable for decades of negligence and damage," added Toles O'Laughlin, recognizing the youth activists that inspired the global movement.

Some of those youth activists—including Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg—gathered outside the U.N. headquarters in New York Friday, chanting: "No more coal! No more oil! Keep the carbon in the soil!"

Xiye Bastida of Fridays For Future NYC explained that the global strike on Sept. 20 "isn't a goal, it's a catalyst for future action."

"It's a catalyst for the engagement of humanity in the protection of Earth," Bastida continued. "It's a catalyst for realizing the intersectionality that the climate crisis has with every other issue. It's a catalyst for the culmination of hundreds of climate activists who won't stop fighting until the climate emergency is over."

A campaign by U.K. Student Climate Network shared a video promoting the actions Friday that caught the attention of author and activist Naomi Klein—one of the high-profile adult climate leaders who have spoken out in support of the global strike.

In addition to NYC, activists are organizing strikes in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Seattle, Washington D.C., and other major U.S. cities.

Jesus Villalba Gastelum, a 16-year-old Earth Uprising L.A. city coordinator and Youth Climate Strike Los Angeles organizer, noted that L.A. is "a diverse city of many roots, including Indigenous, Mexican, Spanish, American, and Tongva."

"We are organizing the L.A. Youth Climate Strike from a place of love, hope, and resolve," said Villalba Gastelum. "Our march is calling out inaction on the climate crisis, and stands in support of refugee rights, human rights, and dignity for all."

Villalba Gastelum added that "while this mobilization is youth led, we welcome people of all generations to join us."

Looking ahead to the upcoming actions around the world, Future Coalition executive director Katie Eder said Friday that "our message will be clear—we must act now to avoid the worst effects of climate change because all of our lives depend upon it. We are the new face of the climate revolution and we demand just and equitable climate action."

The Future Coalition, which is coordinating the U.S. youth-led strikes, has released a list of demands for the actions. Fast Company detailed those demands in a report earlier this week:

A Green New Deal: Building on "the" Green New Deal resolution in Congress, this calls for transforming the economy to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, while creating jobs and ending leases and permits for fossil fuel projects.

Respect for indigenous land and sovereignty: Honoring treaties protecting indigenous land by ending resource extraction in and affecting those areas.
Environmental justice: Investing in the communities affected most by poverty and pollution.

Protecting biodiversity: Protecting and restoring 50 percent of the world’s lands and oceans and stopping all deforestation by 2030.

Sustainable agriculture: Investing in regenerative agriculture and ending subsidies for industrial agriculture.

"Too often, we think about solutions in a very small-minded way, inside the box," 19-year-old Eder told Fast Company. "We don't have time to stay in the box. We really need to be more innovative with our solutions and ask for what we need, not what we think could be possible or has been possible in the past."

350.org executive director May Boeve, in the group's statement Friday, outlined the emergency the world currently faces and what needs to be done to address it.

"Climate breakdown is one of the greatest human rights issues we face. Fighting climate breakdown is about much more than emissions and scientific metrics—it's about fighting for a just and sustainable world that works for all of us," she said. "We need to start by phasing out fossil fuels, building real and long lasting solutions, and prioritizing the communities at the frontline of the climate crisis."

  • CBO Report Shows Broad Benefits From $15 Federal Minimum Wage
    https://www.commondreams.org/views/2019/07/08/cbo-report-shows-broad-benefits-15-federal-minimum-wage

People gather together to ask the McDonald’s corporation to raise workers wages to a $15 minimum wage as well as demanding the right to a union on May 23, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. On Monday afternoon, Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report assessing the economic impact of raising the minimum wage to $15 in 2025 in six steps (this is a similar policy to the Raise the Wage Act, which would increase the minimum wage to $15 in 2024). The key fact coming out of the report is that CBO finds that the benefits to low wage workers of a $15 minimum wage far exceed the costs.

The report finds that a $15 minimum wage would increase the wages of millions of low wage workers, increase the average incomes of low and lower-middle-income families, reduce poverty, shift money from corporate profits to the wages of low-wage workers, and reduce inequality.

In particular, CBO finds that $15 in 2025 could raise the wages of 27.3 million low-wage workers, would increase the income of families who earn below three times the poverty rate by $21.9 billion, and would reduce the number of people living in poverty by 1.3 million, nearly half of them age 0-18.

CBO finds that the overwhelming share of low-wage workers would benefit from a $15 minimum wage and that as a group, low-wage workers would be unambiguously better off.

While CBO’s bottom line is that the benefits to low-wage workers of a $15 minimum wage would outweigh the costs, CBO nevertheless substantially overstates the costs.

CBO finds that the policy would lead to a decline in employment of 1.3 million—though in choosing the parameters that resulted in that conclusion it failed to appropriately weight the highest quality studies in the vast academic literature on this issue. As a result, policymakers must be skeptical of their assessment of the employment impact, given that other careful reviews of the minimum wage literature have shown that the average study finds small-to-no employment effects of minimum wage increases.

It is not a stretch to say that a new consensus has emerged among economists that minimum wage increases have raised wages without substantial job loss (even the Cato institute acknowledges this “new conventional wisdom”).

More and more, economists are recognizing that simple, dated models of the economy that always predict job loss when the minimum wage is increased are based on assumptions that have little bearing on the low-wage labor market (like the genuinely laughable assumption that in the absence of a meaningful minimum wage, low-wage employers still have no power to set wages below the full value of their workers’ “worth” to the firm).

Well over 100 mainstream economists signed on to this letter in support of increasing the min wage to $15 in 2024. CBO’s assessment of the literature has simply not yet caught up.

Finally, CBO egregiously relegates to an appendix any discussion of what an employment decline as a result of a $15 minimum wage would really mean on the ground.

The crucial fact is that an employment decline as a result of a minimum wage increase doesn’t necessarily mean any worker is actually worse off. For a wide variety of reasons, a sizable share of low-wage workers routinely cycle in an out of employment; each quarter, more than 20 percent of the lowest-wage workers leave or start job.

This means that even if employment does decline as CBO predicts, workers who work less can still come out ahead because they earn much more when they are working. Consider the case of someone who now works a full-time job at $7.25 an hour for ten months a year, but can only find work for eight months when the minimum wage is increased to $15.

This worker experiences a strong negative employment impact of the minimum wage increase, but actually has substantially higher annual earnings. In other words, if you take CBO’s employment estimate at face value, it is important to keep in mind that the top-line number vastly overstates any adverse impact on the living standards of the low wage workers who experience the negative employment effects.

It has been more than 10 years since congress raised the minimum wage—the longest stretch in history. This is a shameful benchmark, reducing the living standards of working families in this country and exacerbating poverty and inequality. Congress should immediately pass the Raise the Wage Act and give this country’s lowest wage workers a raise.

  • Citing $69 Trillion Price Tag by 2100, Moody's Warns Central Banks of Far-Reaching Economic Damage of Climate Crisis
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/07/03/citing-69-trillion-price-tag-2100-moodys-warns-central-banks-far-reaching-economic
    Jessica Corbett, staff writer

Noting previous warnings that the human-caused climate crisis could cause trillions of dollars in damage to the global economy by the end of the century, a new report from Moody's Analytics explores the economic implications of the international community's failure to curb planet-warming emissions.

Moody's Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi told The Washington Post—which first reported on the new analysis—that this is "the first stab at trying to quantify what the macroeconomic consequences might be" of the global climate crisis, and it comes in response to European commercial banks and central banks. The climate emergency is "not a cliff event. It's not a shock to the economy. It's more like a corrosive," Zandi added. But it is "getting weightier with each passing year."

The financial research and consulting firm's analysis (pdf) highlights a few key projections from a report published last October by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): if the average global temperature soars to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—the lower limit of the Paris climate agreement—the cost to the global economy is estimated to be $54 trillion in 2100, and under a warming scenario of 2°C, the cost could reach $69 trillion.

Moody's—whose clients include multinational corporations, governments, central banks, financial regulators and institutions, retailers, mutual funds, utilities, real estate firms, insurance companies, and investors—notes researchers have found that "warming beyond the 2°C threshold could hit tipping points for even larger and irreversible warming feedback loops, such as permanent summer ice melt in the Arctic Ocean."

One of the key takeaways, the report emphasizes, is that economically, "the more draconian effects of climate change are not felt until 2030 and beyond. And they do not become especially pronounced until the second part of the century."

"That's why it is so hard to get people focused on this issue and get a comprehensive policy response," Zandi told the Post. "Business is focused on the next year, or five years out."

"Most of the models go out 30 years," he said, "but, really, the damage to the economy is in the next half-century, and we haven't developed the tools to look out that far."

Responding to the Post report, which emphasized Moody's warning of the anticipated damage to the global economy, some advocates of ambitious global action to slash human-generated greenhouse gas emissions pointed to recent findings from climate experts that the world's temperature could rise 3°C or higher by 2100, implying that the economic costs could exceed the IPCC's upper estimate.

Linking to the Post report, Defend Our Future—a project of the Environmental Defense Fund that aims to empower young people interested in advancing climate and clean energy solutions—tweeted: "There is no denying it: The longer we wait to take bold action to curb emissions, the higher the costs will be for all of us."

Moody's analysts examined the climate emergency's expected economic damage across six impact channels—sea-level rise, human health effects, heat effect of labor productivity, agricultural productivity, tourism, and energy demand—and created forecasts through 2048.

"This analysis reveals that some countries are significantly exposed to rising temperatures while others, particularly in Northern Hemisphere climates, are well insulated," the report says. Those at the greatest risk, analysts found, are "countries in hot climates, particularly those that are emerging economies such as Malaysia, Algeria, the Philippines, and Thailand, and oil producers such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman."

On the agricultural front, rising temperatures are expected to impact both the health of farmworkers and crop yields, which particularly threatens less-developed nations that are economically dependent on farming. Echoing a U.N. report published this week, Moody's notes that "heat stress, determined by high temperature and humidity, lowers working speed, necessitates more frequent breaks, and increases the probability of injury."

The report says that in terms of human health, the number of heat-related deaths worldwide is expected to increase as the global temperature does, and a hotter world "can lengthen the season and increase the geographic range of disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas, allowing them to move into higher altitudes and new regions."

Recognizing some limitations of its analysis, Moody's acknowledges that "there are a number of factors that were not considered in this work. The foremost of these is the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters." The report points to a U.S. government calculation that in the United States alone, disasters caused more than $300 billion in damage in 2017.

As the environmental legal organization Earthjustice concluded in response to the report, "We literally cannot afford inaction on this crisis."

Those at the greatest risk, analysts found, are "countries in hot climates, particularly those that are emerging economies such as Malaysia, Algeria, the Philippines, and Thailand, and oil producers such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman." On the agricultural front, rising temperatures are expected to impact both the health of farmworkers and crop yields, which particularly threatens less-developed nations that are economically dependent on farming. Echoing a U.N. report published this week, Moody's notes that "heat stress, determined by high temperature and humidity, lowers working speed, necessitates more frequent breaks, and increases the probability of injury." The report says that in terms of human health, the number of heat-related deaths worldwide is expected to increase as the global temperature does, and a hotter world "can lengthen the season and increase the geographic range of disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas, allowing them to move into higher altitudes and new regions." Recognizing some limitations of its analysis, Moody's acknowledges that "there are a number of factors that were not considered in this work.
Citing $69 Trillion Price Tag by 2100, Moody's Warns Central Banks of Far-Reaching Economic Damage of Climate Crisis
"There is no denying it: The longer we wait to take bold action to curb emissions, the higher the costs will be for all of us."

On its website, the City of Toronto explains "a territorial or land acknowledgement involves making a statement recognizing the traditional territory of the Indigenous people(s) who called the land home before the arrival of settlers, and in many cases still do call it home.""

You have to wonder what the reaction would be if city hall websites across Britain and Europe were to adopt the same land acknowledgments.

"It's a gesture many say marks a small but important step on the path to reconciliation."

Hmm. On;y a small step? How big a step will be required before we reach the end of that path? Reparations? Rent payments? We all fuck off back to Europe? And would all of the "settlers" in UK and Europe go back to their countries?

Ditto for all of the Spaniards and Portuguese in South and Central America.

  • 'Unfathomable Evil Recognizing Unfathomable Evil': Trump's Possible Pardons of War Criminals Provoke Outrage
    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/05/18/unfathomable-evil-recognizing-unfathomable-evil-trumps-possible-pardons-war
    Jessica Corbett, staff writer

Progressives, human rights advocates, and journalists responded with outrage on Saturday to a New York Times report that President Donald Trump "has requested the immediate preparation of paperwork needed to pardon several American military members accused or convicted of war crimes."

Unnamed U.S. government officials told the Times that on or around Memorial Day, Trump may pardon multiple service members involved with "high-profile cases of murder, attempted murder, and desecration of a corpse."

    As the newspaper reported:

The requests are for Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of the Navy SEALs, who is scheduled to stand trial in the coming weeks on charges of shooting unarmed civilians and killing an enemy captive with a knife while deployed in Iraq.

They are also believed to include the case of a former Blackwater security contractor recently found guilty in the deadly 2007 shooting of dozens of unarmed Iraqis; the case of Maj. Mathew L. Golsteyn, the Army Green Beret accused of killing an unarmed Afghan in 2010; and the case of a group of Marine Corps snipers charged with urinating on the corpse of a dead Taliban fighter.

"These are all extremely complicated cases that have gone through a careful system of consideration," Gary Solis, a retired military judge and armor officer who served in Vietnam, told the Times. "A freewheeling pardon undermines that whole system."

Solis warned that pardoning service members accused or convicted of war crimes "raises the prospect in the minds of the troops that says, 'Whatever we do, if we can get the folks back home behind us, maybe we can get let off.'"

The news on Saturday came after Trump, earlier this month, pardoned former Army 1st Lt. Michael Behenna, who was convicted of murdering an Iraqi prisoner in 2008.

As Common Dreams reported at the time, human rights advocates decried that decision as "a presidential endorsement of a murder that violated the military's own code of justice."

The Times report—on which the White House and Justice Department declined to comment—was met with similar condemnation.

The Atlantic's Adam Serwer, who spoke out against Trump's pardon of Behenna, tweeted, "This incentivizes the commission of war crimes by our opponents and allies, and in doing so puts U.S. service members at greater risk."

Human Rights Watch executive director Ken Roth said, "Think of the horrible message that sends to would-be war criminals around the world."

Murtaza Mohammad Hussain, a reporter at The Intercept, denounced Trump's expected move as "a huge injustice to those whose lives they destroyed and a message that America will tolerate war crimes."

Their criticism was echoed by others, including journalist Ryan Devereaux, who suggested that "if you were to make a list of 'top notorious U.S. war crimes of the post-9/11 era' it would look a lot like the president's pardoning plans."

About Silver Shield MiniMintage Strategy The Silver Shield MiniMintage strategy seeks to combine undervalued silver with meaningful designs, limited mintage, certificates of authenticity, in a growing series with direct to consumer prices. All told this will provide the best bang for your buck in the entire silver market! The Silver Shield Proof MiniMintage strategy is based off of a proven formula to produce the BEST Return on Investment in silver! For years, Silver Shield Proof MiniMintage have been offered to the private Silver Shield Group at direct to consumer prices and have always gone up in value. This is simply because those that buy usually hold on to their MiniMintages and very few reach the secondary markets of FeeBay. The ones that do reach those markets, tend to get bid up in value knowing so few of them will ever come on to the secondary market. Most Silver Shield MiniMintages seem to nearly double in value within a year, with more than a few going up 5x to 15x the original purchase price! This NEW Silver Shield Proof MiniMintage will offer direct to consumer pricing formula. We will offer very competitive prices to the government’s silver with dedicated mint runs to provide the most value to the silver stackers. Silver Shield is historically significant, meaningful art on eternal silver. No fuzzy animals, government propaganda or elitist Queens on our silver. Silver Shield seeks to expose the truth about the Debt and Death Paradigm and offer an individual, conscious solution to these unconscious collectivist problems. Now you will have silver that resonates with the truth of the times and your highest and best self. The next HUGE value we provide with Silver Shield MiniMintage is LIMITED AVAILABILITY. Unlike the millions of Eagles and Maple Leafs that run off the government presses every year after year with the same ole’ design, we will offer something new every week for the same price or better than the government mints. This is a truly exciting private solution to the boring government silver. Growing Semi-Numismatic premiums. The MiniMintage provides a natural collectability that builds numismatic value over time that the government mints simply cannot touch. For the same or better price you could buy one of the hundreds of millions of ounces of Eagles or Maple Leafs, you can now get a limited release Silver Shield MiniMintage . Each MiniMintage is pre-sold and then all orders are run at once. This ensures no huge unsold inventory that typically plagues the government mint programs and suppresses collectors premiums. This is not brain surgery... why would there ever be a growing collectors premium on similarly priced Silver Eagles or Maples Leafs when they make hundreds of millions of them?! Silver Shield is going to provide many small runs of new and meaningful designs. Over time collectors will search for complete sets and search for each of these MiniMintages. While we cannot guarantee the same kind of return we have seen in the Silver Shield Proof MiniMintage strategy, it will certainly be the best bang for your buck versus comparable priced government mint releases. We will not only be offering unique Certificates of Authenticity, but they will have exact mintages on them. Most other premium COAs will have a unique number on it but very few have the total run of the mintage too. Since this will be done as a one and done MiniMintage we will provide you the exact COA number inside the complete run. All of these factors combine into a tremendous value we hope you will look forward to every week as we release more exciting Silver Shield MiniMintages in the future. Thank you! • 9/11 Truther: Israel Engineered Monica Lewinsky Scandal

A prominent 9/11 Truther took to the Iranian state-run press on Saturday to accuse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the "Zionist-controlled media" of "personally engineering" the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Truther Kevin Barrett made the accusation on Saturday at Iran’s state-controlled Press TV in an article headlined, "The Zionists are panicking."

Netanyahu "personally engineered" the scandal to detonate the Middle East peace process, according to Barrett, who claims to rely on first-hand information from Jerry Falwell.

"Christian Zionist leader Jerry Falwell, a friend of Netanyahu, has revealed that Netanyahu personally engineered the ‘affront to Mr. Clinton’—the Monica Lewinsky scandal—that destroyed hopes for Mideast peace," Barrett wrote.

Donald Trump announced on 6 December that the United States was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Most notable about his speech was not what he said, or how he said it, but the presence and demeanor of vice-president Mike Pence. Though an element almost entirely missing from the reams of analysis following Trump’s statement, Pence’s beliefs do much to explain Trump’s motivation.

Washington’s declaration of Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital has provoked sharp criticism across the world, most strongly in the Middle East where 57 members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called for East Jerusalem to be accepted as the capital of a Palestinian state. This may count for little in Trump’s White House, though there might be slightly more concern over the attitudes of the European Union in general and France in particular. Even Britain under Theresa May added its pennyworth.
