Q&A: 'Machine Gun Preacher' star Gerard Butler doesn't want to kick your ass

"I'm actually not as intimidating as I look." (Lenny Gilmore / RedEye)
"Machine Gun Preacher" star Gerard Butler won't name specific movies, but he recognizes that he's made some stinkers.

"There without a doubt have been movies that I've watched and went, 'What a waste of time that was,'" says the Scottish actor, 41, who may or may not have been referring to "The Ugly Truth," "The Bounty Hunter," "Law Abiding Citizen," "P.S. I Love You" and others. "I can say that now and maybe kind of smile about it, but I gotta tell you, when that happens it's really depressing because it's months out of your life."

Clearly Butler (who doesn't mind being called Gerry) had no qualms about diving into "Machine Gun Preacher," opening Sept. 30. In the film Butler plays Sam Childers, a real-life Pennsylvania activist who transformed from a violent, dangerous drug dealer into a religious, self-described freedom fighter. He built an orphanage in Sudan and took down murderous Sudanese rebels by any means necessary. Yes, that means through violence.

Butler worked with a dialect coach, bikers, contractors and plumbers to nail all facets of Sam's life. He frequently referred to a book featuring photos of mutilated African children in order to bring himself to the necessary emotional place for the role. Of course, Butler already owns a Harley, so it's not as if becoming a leather-clad bad boy was that much of a stretch.

At the Four Seasons Hotel, the primarily L.A.-based actor—who swore off alcohol a long time ago, by the way, but indulged me in a chocolate milk chugging contest you can watch above—talked about fake mustaches, public urination and a fan who wanted a swift kick to the chest.

Can you sense a movie you're making is going to be bad at the time or only after you see it?

Both. Normally you can tell. There was a movie that I did that I didn't like and I knew from the first take. And I was relatively inexperienced at that point and I was just so excited that I got the role and I only assumed that the movie was going to be great. I was very naïve. And literally from the first "Action!," a few people in the scene we all started talking and I went, "Oh God, this is going to be crap."

Can you give me one title that made you feel that way?

    No.

    First letter?

    No.

    Rhymes with?

    [Laughs.] Rhymes with "no."

For "Machine Gun Preacher," was there any point at which you tried to grow a mustache like Sam's?

[Laughs.] No, we talked about it. We talked about it quite a lot, and actually I did grow out a beard and mustache but you know what, it's a little too much of a gamble. For instance, in "300" it worked great. We all said, "We're going to stick with this ridiculously long beard," and that worked because it was more stylized. It seemed after the conversation it's a little too much to ask people to take. A lot of people would find it fine; we're already going on a heavy enough-journey without this big mustache. It also looks great on Sam, but it didn't look so good on me.

    You don't think so?

    No, I know so.

It would take me six years to grow it like him.

There's the other thing. It would have had to have been a false mustache; I could never get to that length. "Really, I'm going to spend a whole movie with this big false mustache?" When it's not in truth important enough to the story, and it's just taking a kind of gamble that wasn't really necessary.

What was the hardest part of this role, and what went through your head the first time you touched down in Africa?

The hardest part of the role without a doubt was dealing with the tragedy of Sam's life. Other people in most movies, perhaps in your more dramatic moments life got a little depressing, you struggled with love or something. His journey is so intense that his downs were downs that most people will never experience—the intensities of drug addiction and acting out on that addiction almost to the point of death and extreme violence. Then basically a mental breakdown, witnessing the horrors that he witnessed. That extreme, extreme emotion and physical destruction, having to go to those places was intense. But touching down in Africa was surely exciting for me 'cause I knew this whole movie was a great adventure. Much as it took a lot out of me, it also gave me so much.

Did you ever doubt that you could do it?

I always doubt myself. I swing between thinking, "I'm going to knock this out of the ballpark" to, "This is gonna suck so bad." Even "300," there'd be times that I was going, "OK, this is amazing" to other times when I was thinking, "This is so ridiculous, I can't believe we're standing here looking at nothing, talking nonsense." And I definitely had that with this. "Am I pulling it off? Am I pulling off the accent? Am I pulling off the character? Is it too melodramatic? Am I representing this man well?" So definitely you get that a lot.

How do you think Sam's badassness compares to your badassness?

I think he is truly a badass. I think I'm a little puppy Labrador compared to him.

You've played a lot of masculine characters. What do you think people expect out of you when they meet you?

It's interesting you say that because I've tried to get past thinking about that because it never really leads you anywhere good when you think people have expectations of you. I try to be decent with people. My feeling is generally most people appreciate that, that you can stay grounded and warm and friendly towards 'em. But I have no doubt that sometimes people go, almost, "He's real, he's normal. What a disappointment."

Do you recall something someone said on the street, when they were trying to bring a character out of you?

Oh, all the time. I constantly have people asking me to quote lines from movies, especially "300" of course. Or give 'em one of those kicks. Literally somebody asked me recently to kick him in the chest as hard as I could. They were like, "Go!" I'm like, "Are you kidding me?" "Kick me! Kick me!"

    "I won't be angry, it's OK."

I'm thinking this is funny and I went, "[Laughs] No," and [he said], "Go! Kick me!" And I'm like, "This is so stupid. No, I'm not going to do it." So I hit him in the head with a baseball bat, and then we were fine.

What's something you think reflects a softer side of you that might surprise people? Sam talked about how much he loves cologne.
Maybe I'm a bit of a crybaby. I'm the kind of person that I can I have a little tear in my eye when I watch movies. Sometimes even just somebody tells me a story and if it's powerful I'll tear up.

What's a movie that made you cry? Disney stuff?

What would be a movie that made me cry? Oh my God, a lot of my movies made me cry. "Life is Beautiful." That made me cry. It also made me laugh. You can't beat a movie that makes you laugh and cry at the same time.

How upset were you when you heard about Gerard Depardieu's public urination incident and the careless way he's dishonoring the name Gerard?

[Laughs.] It didn't cross my mind. I'm all for public urination. You should be able to relieve yourself whenever you feel like it.

    This is from personal experience?

Absolutely. I just did it earlier on today. Out on the street. Just close to the hotel.

    Plus:

On Chicago: "I think this city's great. It has all this great architecture and it's a big city but it doesn't feel like a big city. It feels very small town. Really good people. I love walking about this city. It's got a good energy about it … I made a bit of a movie here. I had a girlfriend from here; I came visiting with her. I've been in and out a few times."

On picking roles: "I have always had this feeling to keep it open and see where it leads me and never get stuck into one genre. I remember when I took on 'Phantom' Andrew Lloyd Webber said to me, 'This is going to change your life, and it's going to change the path of your career.' And inside I was thinking, 'No, it's not. I'm still going to keep doing what I'm doing which is everything I can.'

Perhaps ['Machine Gun Preacher'] will lead to slightly more dramatic roles, but that was where I was going anyway. But I don't ever want to stop doing comedies or whatever. I want to keep changing it up."
A role he wouldn't want: "I wouldn't want to jump in on a number 5 or a number 6 of any movie. I think it's more fun to create roles than jumping in on the sequel of something."

On his iPod: "Oh my God. Sigur Ros is one of my favorites. Mogwai. Windy and Carl. I love kind of weird music. I love a bit of Radiohead. Massive Attack. LCD Soundsystem."

    HEARING VOICES
“The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is majestic” (Psalm 29:4)

The concept of hearing "voices" is openly espoused in the secular media. The main character in the popular movie Field of Dreams hears an inner voice while standing in his cornfield at night. It's loud, direct and very spooky! At first he's a little freaked out by the voice, but he is intrigued enough to test the voice's advice. It leads to a grand adventure that culminates in meeting the ghost of his deceased father, reconciling with him, and saving the family farm from foreclosure. Was the movie just an entertaining fantasy or is Satan subtly promoting "nice" little spirit guides that will resolve all our problems?

According to New Age brain/mind researcher Willis Harmon, many people hear voices, but few are willing to admit it to anyone but their closest friends. "It's just one of those things we don't talk about," said the president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Sausalito, California. "I've talked to businessmen, scientists, educators, well-educated professional people, and not only is it reasonably common, it's cherished. It's invited" ( Los Angeles Times, June 1989, part V, p. 1).

New Age proponents like Harmon are trying to give credibility to a phenomenon that was once understood as mental illness. Psychiatrists prescribe antipsychotic drugs for schizophrenics and others who admit that they hear voices. A common bit of advice among recovering alcoholics is: "Don't pay attention to the committee in your head." People seldom share the mental struggle going on inside them for fear that people will think they are going crazy. But I have counselled hundreds of troubled people who were hearing voices and every one of the voices was demonic. The only exceptions are legitimate cases of multiple personality disorder. You need to know that inner voices which don't line up with God's Word are the suggestions of a real devil that must be countered and dispelled by the truth (1Timothy 4:1).
“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”

Prayer: Lord, I reject all voices in my mind, real or imagined, and accept only the authority of Your Word and Your Spirit.

    Christ Jesus the Lord
“Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord...” (Colossians 2:6)

“What’s in a name?” is a famous question from William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. Even though we have two names, and the second is usually our family name, when we look at the name “Jesus Christ,” it does not mean “Christ” is Jesus’ family name. Rather, the name “Christ” is a title, which means, “the anointed one.” Like Queen Elizabeth, we do not call her Elizabeth Queen because “Queen” is not her family name but a title that sets her apart. Similarly, the name “Christ” sets Jesus apart.

Paul puts three titles of Jesus in one sentence to tell us three things we receive when we believe in Him, “just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him” (Colossians 2:6). Firstly, we have received Christ, who is the divine One. Paul goes on to explain, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness” (Colossians 2:9-10). Because the fullness of God lives in Christ, and the fullness of Christ lives in us; therefore, everything God is comes to live within us!

Secondly, we have received Jesus, which is His human person. As the Father declared in a unique way at Jesus’ baptism, “This is My Son, whom I love” (Matthew 3:17), Jesus declared to His disciples, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). We become sons of God only by being in Christ, so we share His Sonship as John writes, “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12-13).

Thirdly, we have received Him as Lord, which is His function as reigning Lord. When Jesus Christ becomes our Lord, there are wonderful facets. He forgives us, cleanses us and guarantees us heaven when we die, because we have already received that gift of eternal life. But do not divide Him up as though His lordship was an optional extra. That is who He is and He comes to take that role in our lives.

When we acknowledge and receive Christ Jesus the Lord, we are set apart by declaring that His deity, sonship and lordship lives in our life through His Spirit. The Spirit of the Lord Jesus knows exactly what it is like to be human. He faced all the struggles of humanity and is able to help us. He knows the pressures that we face and He is not helping us from a distance, but lives within our hearts. Now, doesn’t the name “Christ Jesus the Lord” just comfort us?

Prayer: Praise the name of Christ Jesus the Lord, who dwells within me. Thank You that You are not far away but near and close to me.
Living Truth Daily Devotion, 2019-08-08 Christ Jesus the Lord “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord...” (Colossians 2:6) “What’s in a name?” is a famous question from William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. • Tommy Robonson: A Letter from Jail
"Well, here we are, it’s 5:30 PM, I wanted to wait until I had some updates before I put pen to paper. I’m receiving your emails and letters and for that I’m grateful. I enjoy the updates and I also take satisfaction from the variety of people who write to me. This unjust prison sentence has had the opposite effect. It awakens more people to the corruption of the establishment. I have had letters from doctors, school teachers, professors, nurses etc. All of whom are shocked at the treatment and unjust conviction that I have received.

The first person I saw upon arrival to HMP Belmarsh was Ross Kemp, who is doing a documentary on Belmarsh prison. I’ve been held in total isolation since the moment I entered Belmarsh. I’ve not seen another inmate; I’m held in prison within a prison. I believe the unit that I’m held on was built for IAN HUNTLEY! Other prisoners that have been held here are Abu Hamza and Michael Adebalago!

The staff at Belmarsh have been great, the governor has made sure all of my rights are recognised, to be honest, he’s making the best of a difficult situation having me as a prisoner. I am 100% safe; this is a totally different sentence to my last in HMP Onley.

Upon entry to Belmarsh, I didn’t ask to be isolated, the prison decided to isolate me. When Ross Kemp was interviewing me, I explained to him that I was being held like this for my own safety, but months of total isolation is proven to have a negative impact on someone’s mental-health. You know in an era when everyone from Prince Harry to leading politicians proclaims to care about mental-health, I do struggle to get my head around the fact that my own government see it in the public interest to lock me up for nearly 5 months on solitary confinement in the past year. All this for asking a now-convicted child rapist how he felt about his verdict!

Let me quote you WORD FOR WORD what the Judge at the head of the Queen’s bench division said during her summing up. Let me just point out first that she was promoted to this position just two weeks before my trial!

“the contempt’s we have found proved were NOT ones of deliberate defiance, there was NO intention to interfere with the administration of justice and in the event neither the Akhtar trial or the trial that followed were prejudiced.”

What she is saying right there is that she convicted a journalist of making a mistake that had ZERO impact on the trial. Even my enemies can see that serving five months on solitary confinement for what she describes as not deliberate is simply not fair.

I contest that I even broke any law, it’s simple for those watching the video that the punishment does not fit the crime sorry, my so-called ‘mistake’. I’ve not actually been convicted of a crime, it’s a civil offence! The judges who sentenced me went against the law, they judged AGAINST what the law says on their own website!

Before I get into talking about my appeal let me tell you about the suite I’m being held on, they call it a suite ha. It’s a separate part of the prison with no other prisoners. It’s located underneath healthcare; I look out of my window onto my exercise yard. It’s an exercise yard used only by me; it’s 7 m x 5 m, with four surrounding walls that go up four floors high. It’s a bit like a courtyard within the prison and the windows that look in on it are officers’ windows. Only two cell windows look down from healthcare.

The idea of this unit is that you never leave it and that no one sees you. I have my cell and then a cell next door which just has an exercise bike in. Then another room next door to that with a shower/bath.

My cell door opens at 9 AM when I can then use the bike and shower, make a phone call or spend 30 minutes in the exercise yard. I spend an hour every morning first killing myself on the exercise bike. When I first saw it, I asked the governor “what the f*ck is that”. Now I love it, ha ha. After an hour on the bike, I have a shower, 30-minute walk in the exercise yard and then make a phone call. Then I’m banged up again until 9 AM the next day, sleep and repeat. Last week though I got a pleasant surprise when I was taken at 7:30 AM to the gym. I was given 45 minutes but accompanied by Ross Kemp’s camera crew. I think the idea was to show the country that they made an effort after the trust in the prison service had been seriously damaged by the sight of me walking out of HMP Onley. The mad thing is I thought I looked sound when I was getting released from Onley, I thought I was mentally fine as well. The negative impact of solitary confinement only hit me when I was released.

The governor and nurse in Belmarsh come and check on me daily here. They ask how I am; I say fine but tell them that I’ll be able to let them know properly when I walk out of here having spent an additional 2 ½ months on solitary confinement and complete isolation.

If I walk out of here skinny, it’s not because I’ve been starved. I can eat fine here; the staff make sure of that. I’m just smashing the cell workouts until I can’t do any more. There is not much else to do, it’s hot in here and the days are long.

I hear the Daily Star have deleted their fake news story about an OAP beating me ha ha. The Governor and Ross Kemp both came into my cell with the newspaper. I said to them that I wouldn’t mind but I’ve not seen a single person since the last time Ross saw me upon my arrival. The fake news is shocking, my kids were sent the article and were panicking thinking that dad had been attacked when there was zero truth in the story!

My first appointment with my legal team was cancelled due to an incident in the prison, so it took two weeks before I could sit down with my lawyers. I’ve been having an inner struggle with the appeal. I see a few people have written to me telling me that Avi had heard from my wife and that I was feeling down. It’s because my appeal costs are £84,000!, Plus I’ve just paid £20,000 legal fees for the upcoming court proceedings against the Muslim lawyer who sent that red-haired crackhead to live stream my wife and children, putting their lives in danger.

I don’t know if you’ve heard but I also have to pay their costs from the Old Bailey at £31,000! So not only do they make me go to prison for something I haven’t done but they then make me pay for it, totally insane? That’s like £130,000, it’s f*cking nuts!

They are trying to make it financially impossible to challenge them. I hope you agree with me in believing that this has to be challenged. My family don’t agree which is why I’ve been having an inner struggle over the issue. I had my legal meeting last week and instructed them to go full steam ahead on an appeal against the conviction and also a bail application. I had to pay them £42,000, they required 50% upfront to start with and the rest when we get the appeal/bail application launched.

My next phone call home was to tell my wife. I said that I felt so much better now. All I know what to do is fight what they throw at me. I felt that by not appealing I was giving in to something that is quite clearly a stitch-up.

The lead judge on the Queen’s bench has dirty hands on this case, she lied about me encouraging vigilante attacks and it’s simply not in the video. Will the Supreme Court judge be willing to dirty their hands on my case? Or will my name be cleared!

It would be impossible to fight the establishment without your help and love. My wife’s view is that it’ll be another trial more stress and kissing the kid’s goodbye again, but for me, another trial is another chance to expose their lies. I have to fight it! I just hope you’ll see it is important as I do as it’s a crazy amount of legal costs. Without your help and support, I’m sure I’d already be a broken man, but instead, I’m pumped and ready for round three. The establishment relies on the fact that they don’t think we’ll be able to afford to keep in the fight, so I will ask you to share this everywhere. I’m asking once again, help me fight the establishment! It’s death, prison or glory.

Once the appeal papers are in, I’ll have an immediate bail application. Usually takes about seven days so I could or SHOULD be home earlier than we expected meaning I might get a few weeks with the kids in their summer holidays. It was so good to see my wife, kids and family. Can you believe I’m being held in a cat a prison on a total isolation unit for contempt of f*cking court!

Luton’s first game of the season on Friday night and although I’m locked up, I’m still excited. Just wish I was there with the kids. My son has handled it a bit better than last time, I was able to talk to them all before I went. That morning of court was so difficult; I was so emotional kissing them all goodbye. I knew they would jail me, to be honest, I thought I’d be sitting in solitary for over a year. It’s lucky I’m good company because otherwise all this time alone would drive me mad.

I’m writing my next book, bringing enemy of the stay up-to-date. I done half of it before I come away, first Love to you all

By the way, I’ll need a bus to help me with the amount of mail I’m receiving ha ha ha

PS I’ll probably remember loads I forgot to put in, the main point was that we are appealing! Paperwork should be in next week, then we will have a bail application. Prior thank you to everyone who supports this fight, the struggle continues!

I’ll end this on a nod to my amazing and beautiful wife, three perfect children, my mum dad and family. I love and miss each and every one of you.

Thing I need to finalise when I’m released. I want everyone to know every detail of everything that happened. The ups and downs, I want to thank each and every one of you who support me. I don’t really get a chance to get too down because your support continually lifts me up. I just want to get working on dedicating my months to filming #TheRapeOfBritain."

Well, well. Mueller, the anti-Trump 'attack dog' lied to Congress while under oath. Isn't that reason for charges to be filed? Or does it depend upon whom you are which reinforces that we have a tiered Justice system and are in need of a cleansing BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY . . .

  • #Justification
July 20 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ … Romans 5:1

Justification is an event. The moment you trust Christ for forgiveness your status changes in the Court of Eternity from guilty to innocent. Some think justification is a process.

That view results in a life-long struggle to earn one’s own justification. There is no peace in that, only dread that one may not have done enough to appease the Judge.

God promises that when we are justified we have peace with Him, not because of what we do, but because of what He has done. https://mailchi.mp/315ead16743d/his-image-452677?e=9cbe669f39
